So, you want to design your room on your own? Ok, so let us not waste time, and let’s get straight to the point. Let us take a look at how you can design your room in 10 simple steps!

10 Steps to Design your Room

1) Determine the Style, and Feel of the Room

Whether you want your room to give a soothing effect or a cheerful one, it is up to you! It all depends on what you expect out of the design. But remember, this is a crucial step, as it will decide the further course of your room’s design.

2) Decide your Budget

Aspirations are one thing. But, the budget is an equally critical consideration. Although quality of the furniture, lampshades, wall colours, flooring is a crucial element of your interior design, ensure you don’t choose excessively expensive stuff, and thus keep your budget in control.

Prepare an element-wise budget, and stick to it. However, don’t be too rigid. Some amount of flexibility will help you choose a better alternative, albeit at a bit higher price!

3) Measure your Room

Measure the dimensions of your room and note them down somewhere. Further, add furniture cut-outs to decide the position and placement of furniture. Remember, comfort, ease, and convenience are important considerations. You and your guests must be able to move throughout the room easily, without letting the furniture obstruct movements.

4) Plan the Floor, Fixtures and Lighting Arrangement of the Room.

These are essential elements, determining the aesthetics of your home. Your floor choice, fixtures, and other objects of your room, including furniture, must be aligned with the overall design and layout. Lighting too plays a crucial role. Identify natural sources of light, and choose lampshades going well with the wall colour, and the overall feel you plan your house to have.

5) Decide the Wall Colours of the Room

Wall colour is the first thing everyone will notice about the room, and which will decide the overall look and feel of the room. You may choose the personalized colour scheme of your choice. However, limit the room to three colours, as too many colours may spoil the appearance. Airy, light and bright colours give a pleasant look to the room, while colours such as blue, purple, light green provide a soothing effect.

6) Choose the Curtains

Often, people tend to forget curtains in the wake of aligning the bigger elements such as furniture and wall colours. Remember, a curtain mismatch may let all the efforts down the drain. Hence, the curtains you choose must go well with the wall colour and the overall feel of the room.

Also, curtains must not block natural light, especially if the room you design is a living room. In such a case, choose curtains that reduce excessive glare, but still keep the room naturally lit. If it’s your bedroom, you may choose a darker and soothing curtain shade to help you feel relax and calm.

7) Get on the Floor!

The floor may not be the first thing people notice. But a flooring type, aligned with your furniture, curtains, and the wall colour will undoubtedly create a long-lasting impression. For instance, think how your floor would look when it reflects natural light, or how would it look against the wall colour of your home. Experts recommend choosing a floor colour that’s either two shades darker or brighter as compared to the wall colour.

8) Plan Artificial Lighting

Artificial lighting is as vital as natural lighting, as it shapes, adds to the aesthetics, and the grace of your room during the evening. Before you install lighting, place lights around the room, and see how they feel. Spotlights recessed in the ceiling provide a light, soothing, and directive lighting effect to the room.

9) Plan the Ventilation Part

Of course, you don’t want your room to feel suffocating, do you? So, plan the ventilation part well. Ensure you’ve got adequate number and size of windows to keep the place naturally ventilated. Cross ventilation is preferred over a single source of ventilation, as that will keep the room airy, fresh and pleasant throughout.

10) Seek help from an Interior Designer if Required

Interior designers are qualified professionals who’ve learned the art through organized interior designing courses. If you are stuck with a particular part of the designing process or you want assistance throughout, interior designers can help you.

We hope, this blog helped you, and by now you must have begun imagining your room!
